Two small updates for today. First, we made probably the first tangible step towards admission: we did the TOEFL test. I don’t have the final scores yet, but in general I didn’t find it too hard, and I got perfect scores for the two sections where we get the results right away (reading and listening).
Second, I’d like to recommend a linguistics-relates game. Everyone knows Wordle, and we’ve been playing it so consistently that solving the new day’s Wordle has become a bedtime ritual for me and my wife. However, we didn’t get attached to any of its derivatives – until now. Rootl seems to be created specifically for my interests – it’s a game where you’ve given the etymology of a word and have 6 guesses to find out what the word is. It’s quite challenging for me, because I often expect that my knowledge of Latin should allow me to guess a word on the first try, and I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what the word is, but in practice this almost never works and I still have to guess letter by letter.
And now off to the library! There’s a book waiting for me there, with a paper on Lycian that should provide me with some key pieces for my argument in the forthcoming essay.
